Elections in Malaysia This Year?

There are strong indications that the elections will be held this year, probably in November. They must be held before June next year but it looks increasingly likely that they will take place this year.

The elections will be a crucial test for the success of communicating the continuing progress of the Government Transformation Programme. Despite many indications that the Government’s ambitious plans to transform the Malaysian economy and accelerate economic growth are working, there still appears to be a lot of scepticism among urban Malaysians.

The problem for the opposition is an apparent lack of cohesiveness. While there are certainly some divisions within the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition,they seem fairly minor when compared with the significant differences between the parties which have combined to challenge BN.

It remains to be seen who will triumph, and with mixed predictions among the experts, the outcome is far from certain.
