Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has announced plans to build an ‘airport city’ around the KL International Airports (KLIAS 1 and 2) in a sprawling 100km square development called KL Aeropolis. Inspired by other airport cities around the world like those in Dubai and Hong Kong, the KL Aeropolis will feature zones ranging from aeronautical support to shopping.

By doing this, MAHB hopes to build on the non-aeronautical revenue stream which currently makes up about 50% of KLIA’s total revenue. Aeropolis is part of MAHB’s five year development plan, Runway to Success 2020 (RtS2020). By 2020, MAHB hopes to complete the 400 hectare development, handle 163 million passengers a year and gain a revenue of RM7.6 billion – an ambitious five year plan to become a leader in creating airport cities.

The airport city will be centred around three main sectors which are air cargo and logistics, aerospace and aviation, as well as leisure and conference facilities.

The aeronautical section includes the existing passenger terminal merged with a shopping mall, retail outlets, restaurants, free trade zones, logistics facilities, and air cargo faculties, while the non-aeronautical section will include hotels, offices, convention centres, and entertainment facilities including a golf course, theme park, and themed hotels.
