There has long been a gap in our cultural activities here in Penang and this in an island, which is full of great art, architecture, and artefacts. So the launch of the Penang Decorative & Fine Art Association (DFAS), an offshoot of NADFAS, which delivers talks and study tours to a worldwide audience, is really timely. The lecture series begins with two fascinating presentations by Lars Tharp – one on the fabulous porcelain produced by China for the West, the other on how one English artist used ceramics in his painting and his life.

The Gate of Heroes   The inaugural lecture on 29 November will be given by Lars Tharp  (tharp.co.uk) on the topic will be “The Gate of Heroes – on the China Trail.” Lars will trace the epic 800-mile overland journey made by Chinese porcelain destined for Europe. In the 1600s and 1700s millions of pieces – dinner services, vases, and ornamental wares – were carried from the “secret” porcelain city of Jingdezhen over lakes and mountains to Guangdong province, passing through the “Gate of Heroes”.

Hogarth: Harlots, Rakes & Crashing China The eighteenth century artist Hogarth created scenes of everyday life shot through with social commentary. All sorts of chinaware play a role on his painted stage as bit-part players in his evocative dramas. From the Harlot’s dingy garret to milord’s swanky mantelpiece, ceramics teeter, tumble, or merely stand helplessly by, symbolic commentators on the goings-on around them.
