AMIDST THE HUSTLE and bustle of KL city, it’s not often you find a quiet spot for a meal with a delectable range of Asian and Western fare. Located in the heart of the city, Maya Brasserie is a stone’s throw away from the mammoth shopping mall of Suria KLCC. Despite fierce competition in the form of food courts and hawker stalls that pepper the length of Jalan Ampang, Maya Brasserie holds its own thanks to its unique fusion of Asian and Western flavours.

Situated within Hotel Maya, the warm and inviting décor of Maya Brasserie is a welcome relief from the traffic chaos just outside the hotel’s main entrance. Having been around for the last ten years, the hotel was refurbished in 2004 and special attention was paid to cool, new, eco-friendly designs. Bamboo sticks line the walls of the Brasserie, diners sit on rubber-backed chairs, and a rectangular water feature occupies the middle of the light-filled dining area, lending an island-resort feel to the eatery.

With a team of locally-trained chefs, it comes as no surprise that MayaBrasserie’s highlights are in its Malay/Nyonya selection. Maya Brasserie’s version of the ever-popular Nasi Goreng Kampung – rice fried in shrimp sauce and served with mildly spiced fried chicken, egg, and crackers – is simply delicious thanks to the right blend of spices. Similarly, the Sambal Udang Harimau PetaiNnyonya (tiger prawns cooked with chilli bean paste and petai beans) packs a real punch in the spice department and blends perfectly with the distinctly nutty flavor of the petai bean. A particular treat was the Rusuk Kambing (Australian grilled lamb chops) that were served in the chef’s special sauce; it was a delightful balance of both Asian and Western flavours. Other notable mentions include the Nyonya Chicken Curry, Jiu Hu Char (stir-fried cuttlefish and turnip), and the Ikan Senangin Acar (fish in sweet and sour sauce).

Not to be outdone, the Brasserie’s international counterparts are top notch as well. There is an impressive range of burgers (chicken masala, vegetarian, spicy prawn, and Italian beef), pastas (salmon, aglio e olio, puttanesca, and pomodoro), pizzas, and international favourites (fish and chips, lamb chops, and rib-eye steak). Patrons should remember to leave space for the Brasserie’s mouth-watering dessert selection – definitely not to be missed!
