The Expat Wine Dinner at InterContinental Kuala Lumpur

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Expats arriving at the posh InterContinental hotel in KL soon realised this was not going to be a typical wine dinner. An immense table seating all 60 diners had been set up in one of the InterContinental’s elegant ballrooms and a crack team of dozens were on standby to provide a masterfully choreographed evening of impeccable service.

As people trickled in, they were greeted with glasses of chilled, refreshing Eagle Ridge White Zinfandel from California. Soon, the full crowd was on hand, and as the ballroom doors were opened, guests were stunned by the elaborately set table before them.

InterContinental’s Executive Chef Darrell O’Neill created a superlative three-course meal that left diners gasping for adjectives. The first course was a stunning Boston Lobster dish, featuring a large portion of flawlessly removed claw meat atop a carrot mousseline, accented by delicate morsels of baby beets, asparagus, shiitake mushrooms, and additional lobster meat. This exquisite opening dish was perfectly complemented by a 2010 Eagle Ridge Chardonnay, with understated notes of honeyed oak, and a nice round mouthfeel.

The second course featured a gorgeous Angus Beef and Confit Duck, served with Celeriac and Leeks Ragout, and splashed with a rich Truffle Jus. Accompanying this culinary triumph was an Eagle Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, a lovely wine made in an unconventional medium-bodied manner, which lent a delicate tone to what is typically a bold wine.

Finally, the delighted guests were treated to a Maraicbo Chocolate Sphere with an array of Wild Berries. While diners were still marveling at the beautifully perfect sphere of fine chocolate, servers appeared on cue and poured a stream of hot molten chocolate onto the tennis ball-sized sphere, melting through the thin surface to reveal a treasure of fluffy chocolate mousse inside. A stunning end to a superlative meal, further complemented by fine coffees and teas and a selection of handmade pralines.
