Print Friendly, PDF & Email

With a mixture of great excitement and a little trepidation, the first cohort of students will begin their studies in September 2013 at the brand-new, purpose-built Excelsior International School (EIS) in Seri Alam. Each student carries their own dreams and hopes, and those of their families and other loved ones, so what can they expect as they begin their great adventure at EIS?

FOUNDING PRINCIPAL, JULIAN LEAH, PROVIDES A BRIEF INSIGHT INTO THIS WONDERFUL ADDITION TO THE EDUCATIONAL PROVISION IN ISKANDAR JOHOR:

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to introduce Expat readers to EIS – an outstanding international educational facility, staffed by a highcalibre academic team of expatriate and local teachers, which will deliver a broad, balanced, and challenging curriculum through an effective teacher-pupil ratio in world-class facilities.

The school, comprising Pre-school, Primary, Secondary, and High School sections, is housed in custom-designed areas on an extensive campus situated on a hill overlooking the Seri Alam Township in Iskandar Johor. Students from the age of three to eighteen will be able to progress seamlessly through the sections, receiving internationally accredited programmes of study that lead to qualifications and, ultimately, access to top universities around the world.

The school’s curricula will include the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for students in the High School, the University of Cambridge International Examinations International General Certificate in Secondary Education (IGCSE) for students in the Upper Secondary School and the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme (CLSP) for students in the Lower Secondary School. In the Primary School the curricula will comprise the Cambridge International Primary Programme (CIPP) and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP.) The curricula will also be infused with the Singapore Ministry of Education’s curriculum. The school will emphasise three Pillars of Excellence – The Sciences, the Arts, and Sports. Built into the timetable, in the middle of every school day, all students and staff will also participate in, and provide, Enhanced Curriculum activities. These sessions take place alongside the extensive range of evening, and weekend sporting, arts and other clubs and activities.

One of the fundamental tenets of EIS is that English is not only the medium of instruction, but also the medium of communication and the medium of understanding. The school provides extensive English Language Support to all students – both those acquiring and improving English as a second (or third) language and native speakers wishing to extend the range of their knowledge and improved use of the English Language. Reflecting the international nature of the educational provision, Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin will be offered from the Kindergarten level onwards. In the High School years, students will also be encouraged to learn their mother tongue as either a first or second language. A third language is optional and will be available.

We have a fundamental belief in the holistic development of the whole person. Our pastoral programmes and support mechanisms are designed to ensure that students feel confident in taking on new challenges and enhancing their ability to reach a higher plane of achievement.

EIS will be spread across 20 acres of land within the lush greenery of Seri Alam Township featuring, for example, advanced IT, Science, and Multimedia laboratories, a 500-seat auditorium, specialist facilities for Dance, Drama, Music, and Art, and a range of sporting and recreational facilities such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a large sports hall, tennis courts, a soccer field, and a 400m all-weather running track. It has a capacity for 2,500 students with scope for expansion to over 3,000 students. In addition, hostels for students will be developed in the next phase of the campus overall development programme.

EIS is fully managed and operated by the premier education provider, Raffles Campus Pte Ltd, from Singapore. The EIS campus will be the home of the flagship school for the Raffles Campus network. Our teachers, support staff, administrators, and leaders are committed to providing a world-class international education. We look forward to welcoming students from around the world, and from the local area, to our stunning campus.”
