Kelantan to Face Floods?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Kelantan may face the risk of being hit by floods in the coming months. This, according to the News Straits Times, is based on a forecast of annual rainfall for the state.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, who is also the Chairman of the National Disaster Committee, weather forecast by the Meteorological Department showed that another 30% of rainfall had yet to hit Kelantan. Up till this month, Kelantan had received a 70% share of the annual rainfall. If the remaining volume of rain (30%) occurred within the next three months, then there is a high possibility of a flood.

“Based on the forecast, Kelantan will receive the normal volume of annual rainfall this year. In this context, ‘normal’ means floods are likely,” he told the News Straits Times after attending a briefing on flood preparations by 17 government departments and agencies at the state secretariat here yesterday.

Nazri also said that authorities had identified 729 evacuation centres which could accommodate more than 150,000 flood victims in the state. More than 4,000 relief workers including 2,341 police, firemen and civil defence personnel would be deployed in the event of a flood.

Those living in areas prone to floods should keep themselves updated by listening to the radio, reading the papers and watching television. Those planning a trip to Kelantan might want to rethink their plans.
