Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Malaysia’s badminton legend, Datuk Eddy Choong, passed away yesterday, 28 January 2013. He was 82.

According to reports, Eddy was admitted in a private hospital for two days after he fell ill. Reports say doctors tried hard to resuscitate him after his heart failed.

The New Straits Times wrote that Eddy was supposed to travel to England in March this year, to watch the All England Badminton Championship, something he has been doing for the past years.

Eddy was the four-time All England singles champion in 1953, 1954, 1956 and 1957. The Penang born star rocked the Empress Hall in London in an era when the game was dominated by European players. He also won the doubles championship (All England) for three consecutive years in 1951, 1952 and 1953, when he partnered with his brother. Age was not a hindrance for Eddy, for at 53 years old, he won the All England Veterans Doubles title.

In 1983, he was awarded badminton's highest honour, 'Player of the Year', by the International Badminton Federation (IBF) for excellent performance in the world of badminton. The IBF also set up the Eddy Choong Player of the Year award in recognition of his achievements.  In total, Eddy has won 450 titles; 75 international crowns in four countries.

Eddy will be missed by all those who supported and followed his legendary badminton career.
