Name: Duncan Horne
Home Country: United Kingdom
Maritial status: Married, with 2 children
Other countries you have lived in: Singapore

What brought you to Malaysia?
I originally came to Malaysia as a volunteer teacher on a two-year contract. I have been in Malaysia for the past nine years, with the last seven of them in Kuantan.

What do you like and dislike about living here?
I love the lifestyle in Malaysia. It’s more laid back, everything is conveniently located close by, and the weather is always glorious. We have some great local friends too. There is nothing I dislike – I couldn’t ask for more than this wonderful life I have right now!

What is your favourite holiday destination in Malaysia or the region?
My favourite holiday destination would have to be Singapore simply because it’s clean, attractive, advanced, and always has something new and exciting each time I go! In Malaysia, we love trying out different hotels and blogging about each experience.

Is Malaysia a good country to raise children in?
We have two young daughters under the age of six, and so far it’s been great. There are places to go and things to do. My oldest daughter has joined the local government kindergarten and is learning Malay. She also attends private Chinese classes to learn Mandarin.

Is Malaysia a good place to work or do business in?
Malaysia is a great place to work and do business. We opened our own business in Kuantan and so far have found it very profitable. If you have what people need, you can have a very successful business in Malaysia. Of course, it helps to have a local wife when it comes to paperwork and all that!

What advice would you give to a newly arrived expat?
The best thing to do is to just immerse yourself in the Malaysian lifestyle and live the Malaysian way. Get to know the locals and just enjoy everything that Malaysia has to offer, it’s a great place to live!
