Awana Skyway in Genting Highlands (the cable car system in Genting) ceased operations recently, after 40 years of service.

Built in 1975, Awana Skyway was Malaysia’s first cable car system. It was previously known as the Sri Layang cable car system or the Flying Carpet Cable Car Ride.

The old cable car used a jig-back system spanning 3.4km over five towers and connecting three stations; Awana, Chin Swee and Genting. Each cabin could accommodate 40 passengers at a speed of five metres per second.

The construction of the new cable car is expected to complete in 2016. The new cable car will comprise of 106 gondolas and will be able to cover a distance of 2.8km. Also, the new system will be able to accommodate up to 2,000 passengers per hour from Sri Layang/Awana to the Resort.
