The Weinstein Company will be shooting a TV series in Malaysia, as part of Netflix’s original series, based on the life of famed adventurer Marco Polo.

If you remember from your history class, Marco Polo, a 13th century Italian explorer, spent many years in China and formed a diplomatic relationship with the country’s Mongol ruler, Kublai Khan.

The Weinstein Company have set up camp at Johor Bahru’s Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios to shoot the nine-episode series. Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, approached John Fusco to take on the project as executive producer and creator. Some of the talented scriptwriters working on this series have worked on hit TV series such as Sons of Anarchy and Law & Order.

The first season of the series has already been written and the pilot will be directed by Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who worked on the Oscar-nominated Kon-Tiki. Daniel Minahan, director of Game Of Thrones, is expected to direct a few episodes.

Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios is a film and TV studio facility for Asia-Pacific. The studio marks an alliance between Britain’s Pinewood Studios Group and the local government’s investment holding arm, Khazanah Nasional Bhd. Marco Polo will be the first major production to film on location at Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios.
