A new operation on the smoking ban in public transportation was recently launched. The operation involves enforcement officers from the Ministry of Health, Royal Malaysian Police, Road Transport Department and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

Besides aiming to ensure that all public transport operators displayed the “No Smoking” sign inside their vehicles, the ban is also aimed at protecting non-smokers, second-hand smokers.

Those who violate the smoking ban would likely have to cough up a compound of not exceeding RM5, 000, a maximum fine of RM10, 000 or a maximum jail sentence of two years if convicted under the regulations. Public transport operators would also have to cough up (if they failed to display the “No Smoking” sign) a compound of RM1, 500, a fine of not exceeding RM3, 000 or maximum jail sentence of six months.
