Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed his appointment as Chairman of Proton Holdings Bhd, pending an official announcement from Proton.
Since going private in 2012, the company, DRB-Hicom, have been slowly sliding down the industry. This is due to the influx of cheaper foreign imports and the competition from Perodua, among others.
“My plan is to work with Proton, and make it (Proton) a success,” said Dr Mahathir, who was appointed for his knowledge and influence in the industry and government.
Dr Mahathir is also the current advisor for Proton, since retiring as prime minister in 2003, and will also be appointed as Chairman of Proton’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Lotus Plc.
