Malaysia’s Household Income Continues to Rise

The latest Household Income Survey showed that the average monthly household income has now reached RM5,900, up from RM5,000 when the last survey was done in 2012. It should be noted that this is household income, not personal income, meaning this is the total income earned by everyone living in a particular residence.

The survey is carried out twice every five years, which is the length of each Malaysia Development Plan period. The previous survey in 2009 showed average household income at RM4,025 so there has been a steady increase in incomes with an average annual increase of 8% over the last six years.

Average household incomes in Greater Kuala Lumpur are, unsurprisingly, significantly higher than the average for the country. In the 2012 survey, KL households earned 70% more than the national average.
