5 Tips to Take Great Photographs of Food Using Your Phone

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Next to selfies and wefies, people enjoy snapping photos of their food. From the moment the dish is placed in front of you, before one bite is taken, a photo and an upload is a must!

But taking bad photos is also pretty common. You want your photo to stand out. You want people to look at your photo and feel ravenous, right?

Well, to ensure your photo is Instagram/ Facebook worthy of likes and shares every single time without the use of a fancy camera and lighting equipment, here are some handy tips to take note off.

 1. Use Natural Light

Sunlight

Do not use overhead lighting or the flash on your camera. Place your dish by the window and the sunlight will help illuminate your food just right and showcase the colours on your plate beautifully. This works well if you are sitting outside, too.

2. Don’t Forget the Garnish

Garnish

Some food taste a lot better than they look. Taking photos of these kinds of foods can be tricky, which is why it is important to play with garnishing. Smart garnishing makes monochromatic, non-texture food such as hummus and soups appear much more appetizing. A little staging goes a long way.

 3. Focus, Focus, Focus

Focus

Hide your flaws and emphasize your beauty, right? Bring the viewer’s eye right to the most appetizing part of the dish by focusing on it and blurring the rest as background.

 4. Perfect Can be Boring

Before trying to “arrange” the food on your plate to look a bit neater or wiping the crumbs off the plate, stop, and take a look through your lens. You might find that a bit of spontaneous (or deliberate) mess makes a charming dish.

5. Not all Food is Camera-worthy

No matter how good it might taste, you won’t get a good photo out of an unappetizing looking dish. Put away your camera and enjoy it for what it is- good food.

Follow the tips above and you might not even need a filter for your next Instagram/ Facebook upload.
