September has been a big month for motorsports fans in Malaysia – and the fun isn’t over yet. Just a few weeks after the 2016 Formula 1 PETRONAS Malaysia Grand Prix, motoring enthusiasts can look forward to the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix 2016, which will be held from 28th to 30th October. It’ll be another thrilling weekend of races, fun-filled activities, and music.

We have four reasons why you don’t want to miss this year’s MotoGP in Malaysia.

1. It’s one of the biggest motorsports events in the world

The MotoGP is the two-wheeled equivalent of the F1 Grand Prix, with tens of thousands of spectators coming from around the world. The Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix championship is currently divided into three classes: MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3. During the event this 28th to 30th October, fans can expect to be thrilled with rivalry on the track and a spectacular carnival off the track.

Last year, over 150,000 spectators attended the three-day race weekend, making it a record-breaking sellout event. The MotoGP race week is undeniably the best two-wheeled motorsports festival in Southeast Asia and one that is not to be missed.

2. There’s plenty of local interest

Locals will be getting behind the Malaysian riders taking part in this year’s event; the most notable is Khairul Idham Pawi who made headlines a few months ago when he became the first Malaysian to win a Grand Prix race in any class. Pawi has now taken two victories in Moto3 this year, in Argentina and Germany.

Also racing in the Moto3 class is Adam Norrodin, who won a space in the hearts of all Malaysians when he almost took a podium finish in Argentina but fell off his bike on the last corner. That didn’t stop him though, as he got right back up and pushed his bike across the finish line, placing 11th in the race – his best placing to date.

In Moto2, Hafizh Syahrin will be representing Malaysia as the only local hero in the Moto2 category, making Malaysia proud with his performance in the various races this year.

Beyond the three races, the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup support race will also be showcasing two Malaysian boys, Ahmad Idham Khairuddin and Izam Ikmal.

3. Rock out at the Rockaway Festival

On the same weekend, there will be a huge treat for music fans with the Rockaway Festival taking place at Hillstand B which overlooks turns 13 and 14 of the track, allowing concert-goers a chance to enjoy both the music festival and the Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.

This year, Rockaway has announced a jam-packed line up with big acts such as Scorpions, Taking Back Sundays, Alleycats, Zainal Abidin, Butterfingers, Wings, Son of a Policeman, One Buck Short and more.

4. There’s tonnes to do beyond the race track

Meanwhile, new on the programme is a riders’ cycling activity where MotoGP riders will face off against Malaysia’s very own athletes, the Riders’ Fan Forum, and a special Watch the Race from the Sky activity.

Meanwhile, leading up to race week, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is organising activities including live viewing sessions of Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix races complete with contests and prize giveaways. So be sure to catch the upcoming races at The Podium by Daun in Sri Hartamas. Keep track of the timing on SIC’s Facebook page.
