Coffee is enjoying a sustained surge in popularity throughout Malaysia, with hipster cafés cropping up seemingly every week, taking their place beside more established coffee chain stores, and of course, Malaysia’s famed kopitiams. Increasingly, people are looking to recreate some of their favourite coffee drinks at home, too – or maybe to just enjoy a proper, quality black coffee, freshly brewed. Obviously, a large part of the shift is due to months spent in lockdown, but as many have found, if you have the right equipment and a supply of fresh, quality coffee beans, there’s no reason why you can’t have café-worthy coffee right at home. And with more people than ever now working from home at least part of the time, there’s never been a better time to embrace good coffee made at home!
Whatever your coffee needs, there is one homegrown company here in Malaysia that is exceptionally well-placed to serve up a tasty solution, and that’s Mister Coffee. With its roots stretching back to a humble local roasting operation in Muar, Johor in 1982, Mister Coffee has made serious strides in the intervening years and transformed itself into “The Complete Coffee Company” – offering far more than just packets of ground coffee!
The company initially roasted local beans in the traditional Malaysian way – that is, with margarine, salt, and caramelised sugar – then ground the beans and sold the coffee at local markets. Over time, they moved into the next phase: supplying their tasty coffees to kopitiams and family coffee shops.
Times have definitely changed! Today, growing coffee beans is no longer practised much in Malaysia, as bigger cash crops have taken priority. So like any resilient company, Mister Coffee evolved to meet the demands of a changing marketplace. Today, rather than relying on locally sourced beans, the company imports green coffee beans from all over the world and custom-roasts those beans in their Johor facilities. This is no longer a small start-up, either: Mister Coffee roasts more than 36 tonnes of coffee beans every month!
Their coffees come in different categories, so if you want a special roast that’s ideal for espresso-type extraction, there are several blends from which to choose. The country-specific beans, meanwhile, are excellent choices to reflect the diversity of coffee from region to region. With beans from such locales as Ethiopia, Guatemala, Sumatra, Colombia, Honduras, Vietnam, Tanzania, and more, coffee lovers are able to “experiment” with a wide range of beans grown in and sourced from vastly different parts of the world.
A higher range of single-origin specialty coffees offers a more tightly defined place of origin, with beans originating from highly localised, specific areas in several countries renowned for fine coffees, such as Costa Rica, Indonesia, and Ethiopia. (Beans from this range make excellent gifts for coffee lovers!)
Finally, there are species-focussed coffee blends, including Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. Nearly all of the coffees are available either in ground or whole bean versions, too.
But though Mister Coffee offers over 70 coffee products, it doesn’t end there. Mister Coffee actually led the pack in pioneering pod-based coffee brewing systems back in 2007, and now they offer two excellent home systems that each utilise an environmentally responsible paper filter pod, rather than plastic disposables. They also sell, lease, and service machines to small offices, hotels, and other businesses. So from countertop home units to large-scale heavy volume automatic grind-and-brew machines to those gleaming commercial espresso machines that look like industrial works of art, Mister Coffee truly lives up to its claim as Malaysia’s Complete Coffee Company.
The best way to familiarise yourself with Mister Coffee’s products and services is to visit their website and try their coffees for yourself. (The value-for-money prices will astound you, especially if you’re used to buying coffee beans in supermarkets or at a café!) Our own staff have tried a wide range of whole beans from Mister Coffee in our offices and homes and have been very pleased by the quality, freshness, consistency, and value offered.
