Agoda’s latest data puts Kuching back in the spotlight as Malaysia’s cheapest domestic travel destination this summer, with average hotel rates beating out numerous other popular spots across the region.

If you’re looking for a wallet-friendly summer holiday, Kuching might just be the place. The Sarawakian capital has been named one of Asia’s most affordable destinations for the June–August travel season, based on Agoda’s latest hotel booking data. With an average room rate of just RM227.64 per night, Kuching leads Malaysia’s value-for-money getaways and lands firmly on Asia’s top list for affordability.

We were recently in Kuching for three nights to kick off a land-based tour of Sarawak, and while the purpose of our trip was to highlight the merits of the CAM Co-Star minibus and discover how accessible it made many of the state’s wonderful tourism assets, we were delighted to spend the first few days in the capital city. Unsurprisingly, its general affordability made our days and nights that much more enjoyable.

From value-for-money accommodation at all levels to great food at places like Izzy’s – a fabulous dining experience our group could not stop raving about – and Bidayuh-focused Jak Ma’An, all the way to hawker centres and local cafés, the price was always right in Kuching.

And what we liked is that you’re not giving up too many big-city creature comforts to tap into that affordability, either. For a good night’s sleep, you can pick from five-star options like the Hilton, Pullman, or Sheraton, all within a short stroll of Kuching’s enchanting waterfront area along the Sarawak River.

Dining and shopping options don’t quite live up to Kuala Lumpur standards, of course, but you’ll love the food scene in Kuching, and the shopping is fantastic if you shift your gaze to local handiwork and artifacts rather than branded handbags and overpriced tchotchkes.

The Cheapest Summer Destinations ranking was compiled using average room rate data from bookings made between March and May, with travel dates from June through August 2025. Only the ten most popular destinations in each of nine key Asian markets were considered, giving travellers a solid sense of which locations deliver the best bang for their buck this season.

According to Fabian Teja, Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, the findings highlight a range of affordable and enriching travel experiences. “Whether it’s exploring heritage trails in Kuching, indulging in street food in Hat Yai, or discovering temples in Tirupati, these places offer travellers the chance to explore without stretching their wallets.”

Kuching’s appeal lies in its blend of laid-back charm and cultural richness. The city offers easy access to sites like Bako National Park and the Sarawak Cultural Village, along with a thriving food scene, colonial architecture, and a distinctly local vibe that’s hard to beat.

With the cost of travel rising in many parts of the world, Agoda’s list is a welcome reminder that great holidays don’t have to come with a big price tag. Whether you’re planning a short domestic break or a regional summer escape, Kuching remains a standout pick for value-conscious travellers. We loved it, and found it not only appealing in its own right as a destination, but an excellent jumping-off point for exploring other parts of the vast state of Sarawak!
