Niamh Spurr, A Mental Health Volunteer in Malaysia

Name: Niamh Spurr
Home country: Northern Ireland (UK)
Designation: Mental Health Volunteer
Marital status: Single

What brought you to Malaysia and how long have you been here?
I came here for the chance to travel. I am staying with family friends and travelling around Asia, but Johor is my base. I came out in September.

What were your impressions of Malaysia before you came?
I had zero impressions. Like a well-educated idiot, I could just about point to it on a map before I decided to go. One point people kept bringing up is that it is very dangerous, which I think is total nonsense.

What are the three things you like most about living in Malaysia?
I love the weather; I have never been so tanned in my entire life. I like the people; after travelling a strong portion of Asia I have found the Malays to be the friendliest and they have the best sense of humour. I also like the location; it is easy to use it as a springboard to visit other places in Asia.

What three things do you wish you could change about Malaysia?
The taxi drivers: they rip you off and often don’t know where they are going. This whole “Malaysian Time” thing; it ages me! I also dislike the roads; it’s like a kid went crazy with a scaletrix set.

How do you like to spend weekend?
Haha… All the D’s: drinking, dancing, and, on a Sunday, dying! Wow, I sound highly cultured.

What do you miss most about your home country?
Without a doubt I miss all my friends; in the ideal world we would all live in Malaysia together. However, I have found some gem personalities here in Malaysia that have become great friends.

What is your favourite local food?
It would be a close call between nasi goreng and roti canai.100 Plus has also become a firm favourite in the drink department.

What one memory will you always treasure when you leave Malaysia?
When I finish making memories here I will be in a better position to choose one.
