25.6 % of Deaths in Malaysia Last Year Due to Heart Diseases

A recent article on Bernama reports that a total of 25.6 % of deaths in Malaysia last year were due to cardiovascular diseases (heart disease and stroke).

According to a statement by Health Director-General Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman, cardiovascular diseases is still the number one cause of deaths at government hospitals.

“The risk factors contributing to heart disease are diabetes and hypertension. The 2011 National Morbidity and Health Survey (NHMS) showed that more women have diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and obesity compared with men,” he said in a statement to Bernama.

He also said that the World Heart Day celebration this year would focus on prevention of diseases among women and children, as there is an increase in the risk of women being prone to cardiovascular diseases.
