An Expat’s Perception on Malaysia: “Malaysia seemed to be a nice place to live, and it is!”

Name: Pauline Hardwood
Home Country: UK
Industry/Job: Director of PH Modelling & Finishing Academy (Penang)
Other Countries you have lived: Mexico, New York, Spain, Canary Islands

What were your impressions of Malaysia before you came?
I didn’t have any expectations other than that Malaysia seemed to be a nice place to live, and it is! The people are very friendly.

What are the three things you like most about living in Malaysia?
I like mixing with so many different cultures, and getting invited to so many different functions. I never get bored because there is so much happening in Penang. I like the pace of life here in Malaysia, and I also like having so many things to photograph.

What three things you don’t like about living in Malaysia?
I dislike the humidity here in Malaysia, and I dislike the way children are transported on motorbikes. I also don’t like how difficult it is to find nicely furnished and well maintained rental property here.

Name three places you would take an overseas visitor.
I would take my overseas visitors to KL, to Langkawi island, and then to Sabah to see the orang utans.

What do you like to do at the weekend?
I enjoy socialising with some of the wonderful friends I have made here. I also like going shopping and taking photographs.

What do you miss most about your home country?
I do not miss a lot about the UK besides my family.

Are most of your friends expats or locals?
I would say I have a mixture of local and expat friends; 50/50.
