Car Sales Continue to Grow

Long-term expats frequently comment on the growing number of cars on the road and increased traffic congestion, particularly if they live in or close to a major city. There is no question that there has been a massive investment in upgrading and building new roads and highways, but the number of vehicles continues to grow even faster.

In 2012, some 552,000 new passenger cars were registered in Malaysia compared with around 80,000 registered in 1982. The top-selling cars in Malaysia – with well over 50% market share combined – are made by Perodua (primarily its hugely popular Myvi models) and Proton, in first and second places, respectively. Toyota comes in third with a little over 11% market share.
