In response to the rise in contract killings, the police have started an extensive campaign against the various organized gangs that operate in Malaysia. It began with the release of the names of the gangs and their leaders and continued with raids which resulted in the arrest of thousands of suspected gang members and the shooting deaths of others. Since many gang members carry identifying tattoos, it makes the job of finding them that much easier, although there were reports that some people were trying to have them removed. It remains to be seen what the outcome of this major offensive will be but it is hard to imagine it won’t hurt the criminals’ operations.
