The post The World’s 50 Best Hotels Named in Glitzy London Event appeared first on ExpatGo.
]]>You may be familiar with The Capella Singapore, a luxury hotel located on Sentosa Island. Now, its counterpart in Bangkok has some real bragging rights, having just been named the world’s best hotel.
The Capella Bangkok had a challenging start when it opened its doors in 2020, near the height of the global pandemic and a time when the hospitality industry faced unprecedented struggles. Fast forward four years, and this luxurious riverside retreat has not only survived but thrived, recently securing the coveted top spot in the second edition of the World’s 50 Best Hotels list. The announcement came during a prestigious awards ceremony held in London.
Set in the historic Charoenkrung neighbourhood, all 101 rooms at Capella Bangkok offer spacious, light-filled accommodation, with the riverside villas, featuring private gardens and plunge pools, standing out as particularly unique. General Manager John Blanco spoke to CNN Travel after the win, describing the contrast between Bangkok’s chaotic energy and the peaceful atmosphere the hotel provides. “When you come to the hotel, you’re in this little moment of Zen,” Blanco said, highlighting the hotel’s garden with its bird-filled trees as a tranquil sanctuary.
Marketing Director Josephine Png shared her favourite aspect of Capella Bangkok: “On the terrace by the river under the trees,” she explained, where guests can experience tranquillity by day and the lively energy of the river at night, with party boats adding to the spectacle.
While opening during the pandemic was tough, Blanco viewed it as a blessing in disguise. “Covid gave us an opportunity to really get warm and fuzzy and close with the Thais, who are amazing customers,” he said. As international travel resumed, Capella Bangkok has seen a steady increase in global visitors, many of whom have become repeat guests. “Thailand is one of those destinations… you fall in love with and need more of,” Blanco added.
Capella Bangkok was one of four Thai hotels to make the prestigious list, including the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, which placed 12th and 14th respectively. The Siam, another luxury gem in the capital, came in at 26th. Asia’s dominance in the rankings was clear, with seven of the top 10 hotels hailing from the region.
Hong Kong’s Rosewood and The Upper House also made strong showings, coming in at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Singapore’s 137-year-old Raffles, home of the famous Singapore Sling cocktail, secured sixth place. Meanwhile, the Maldives’ Soneva Fushi, known for its barefoot luxury, took eighth place and won the Lost Explorer ‘Best Beach Hotel’ Award 2024. The resort famously asks guests to hand over their shoes upon arrival, with shoes only returned when guests leave.
Japan was also represented, with Bulgari Tokyo coming in at No. 22 and winning the Nikka ‘Best New Hotel’ Award 2024.
While Asia celebrated several wins, European hotels also performed well. Last year’s top hotel, Passalacqua in Italy, nestled by Lake Como, fell to second place this year. Paris saw several of its top hotels make the list, including Cheval Blanc in fourth place, the elegant Hôtel de Crillon at No. 15, and Le Bristol at No. 40.
London, the host city, featured several classics, with Claridge’s and The Connaught ranking at No. 11 and No. 46, respectively. The newly opened Raffles London at The OWO made an impressive debut at No. 13, earning the Lavazza Highest New Entry Award. Dubai also had a notable showing, with Atlantis The Royal taking ninth place and winning the Highest Climber Award. Another Dubai entry, The Lana, came in at No. 23.
Beyond Europe and Asia, Mexico’s Chablé Yucatán was ranked 16th and named the Best Hotel in North America, offering a wellness retreat set around a sacred Mayan pool. In Australia, The Calile, located in Brisbane’s vibrant James Street area, was named Best Hotel in Oceania, ranking 25th. It was joined by The Tasman in Hobart at No. 49, reflecting the rising popularity of Australia’s hotel offerings.
Africa was also well-represented, with two top hotels from Marrakech – La Mamounia at No. 31 and Royal Mansour at No. 38. Earlier, Royal Mansour was named the world’s most welcoming hotel, a teaser leading up to the full list reveal.
The rapidly growing Istanbul hospitality scene also received recognition, with The Peninsula Istanbul, located along the Bosphorus, winning the American Express ‘One to Watch’ Award.
As the 2024 World’s 50 Best Hotels list reflects, both well-established and emerging destinations continue to push the boundaries of luxury hospitality, with Asia particularly standing out as a hub for world-class hotels.

]]>The George, in the heart of the heritage district in Penang’s George Town, is a relatively new hotel, but it was not only inspired by the island’s colonial heritage, it was built in accordance with the rules and regulations governing heritage properties, adhering to the guidelines set forth by UNESCO.
We recently visited the elegant property and found a lot to like, not least the fusion of heritage aesthetics with more modern design and construction and five-star conveniences. Simply put, The George is one of Penang’s most winning, appealing boutique properties, and it’s now been brought under the group that includes The Ascott, Citadines, and several other brands, to become The George Penang by The Crest Collection.
This charming six-floor city hotel offers guests 92 tastefully furnished rooms and suites. All of them have contemporary facilities and amenities, which are thoughtfully designed to exude good taste and luxury. The steam rooms, gym, and a long, fully covered saltwater swimming pool with indoor landscaping are added benefits for guests. An additional specialty of the hotel is its multi-cuisine restaurant, Saffron Dining, where meals are enjoyed in a venue with a lovely ambiance.
We stayed in one of the Governor Suite rooms, and absolutely loved it, not least for its beautiful balcony overlooking the always-thriving street scene below. The room’s design was so elegant and we really appreciated the well-coordinated colour scheme, too! It should be noted, however, that despite the name, the Governor Suites are rooms — not suites. Proper suites are available at The George, of course, but this is just a very nicely appointed room.
The hotel’s location could hardly be any better, either. The George stands as an iconic monument in the heart of George Town, Penang, gracefully positioned at the intersection of four historic streets: Penang Road, Leith Street, Chulia Street, and Argyll Road. Its location bears witness to Penang Island’s rich tapestry of history. In bygone eras, it proudly served as the distinguished Australian Hotel and Teik Bin Chinese Dispensary.
Just opposite the hotel, Argyll Road held a special place in the vibrant tapestry of Little India, catering to the local Indian community. Meanwhile, the neighbouring Odeon Cinema regaled countless generations during the golden age of film in Penang.
The George’s strategic location and its timeless architectural allure have already made it a favourite among photographers and visitors alike. It stands as an enduring testament to George Town’s captivating past and continues to be a symbol of the city’s charm and character.
We loved our time at The George and the hotel has quickly taken its place among our favourite upmarket Penang properties. We are certainly looking forward to seeing how the new management and its prominent placement under The Crest Collection helps to make this lovely property even better.
If you haven’t dropped by The George yet, we are working on a terrific opportunity… together with the hotel’s management, TEG Media will soon be hosting a fun Penang Mingle at the inviting bar on the ground floor at the hotel. Stay tuned for the date and details on this social and professional networking event that’s sure to be a great time, and a perfect introduction to one of George Town’s most elegant and charming hotels, The George.

]]>Modern contemporary batik trendsetter, designer, and business owner Fern Chua has come a long way since starting her eponymous label FERN back in 2013.
Putting a spin on the centuries-old craft, Fern has made her mark experimenting with watercolours and distinctive patterns of corals, waves, and of course, fern leaves. In further attempts to understand and honour the artform, she also has made visits to the cradle of the technique in Kelantan and Terengganu.
As one of batik’s most modern leading influencers, Fern has been hailed as one of the craft’s most passionate advocates, bringing it to new heights and fashion.
This year, The RuMa Hotel and Residences features FERN in conjunction with a limited edition collection of mooncakes. The collection features FERN’s distinctive prints in a drawstring bag containing the mooncakes, presented in a fashionable wicker bag for continued life and service beyond the festive season.
Priced at RM188 per box of two pieces (Lotus Paste with Double Yolk and Bamboo Charcoal Black Sesame), or RM258 per box of four (Cranberry Lotus Paste, Tiramisu Lotus Paste with Chocolate Lava, Durian Lotus Paste, and Assorted Fruits and Nuts), these mooncakes are available from July 15 until September 10, 2022 while stocks last.
