Malaysian Traffic Offenders to Pay for New Traffic Cameras

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Traffic offenders might want to think twice the next time they decide to break the law as they will indirectly be paying for Malaysia’s new Automated Enforcement System (AES), a high-technology camera that will be used in detecting traffic offenders.

Instead of using tax payer’s money, fines collected from traffic offenders will be used to pay for the system.

According to a report in The Sun Daily, under the terms of the privately-financed AES project, two companies (ATES Sdn Bhd and Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd) which put up the capital to install and operate the system will be getting their returns through a share of the fines collected over a period of five years.

Beta Tegap holds the concession for the southern part of the peninsular from Selangor and Pahang downwards, while ATES holds the concession for the rest of the country, including Sabah and Sarawak.

The above two companies are reportedly spending between RM300-RM400 million each for the project of setting up over 1,000 traffic cameras at more than 800 “black spots” nationwide.
