Internet Users to Be Held Responsible for Published Content

The debatable Section 114A of the Evidence Act will not be reviewed because the government has decided that the law is here to stay, reports the New Straits Times.

According to a comment made by a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, the law was put in place to protect the people.

“”I would have hesitated to table the bill in Parliament in April if for once I thought that the amendment would not serve the security of the country,” he says.

Section 114A of the Evidence Act deals with illicit or harmful content on the Internet. In short, the amendment enables law enforcement officials to swiftly hold someone accountable for publishing seditious, defamatory, or libellous content online. Those who own, administrate, or edit websites open to public contributors, such as online forums or blogs will be held accountable for postings made by others, because they are presumed to be publishers of said content until proven otherwise.

What are your thoughts on Section 114A? Will this new amendment help serve the security of the country?
