The New Straits Times reported that health travellers to Malaysia will receive better medical facilities and services beginning next year, such as transportation from airport to hospital.

This is to maintain and encourage the growing number of health travellers seeking treatment such as knee replacement surgery, cardiac surgery and cancer treatment in Malaysia.

“The ministry has identified a site (at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and put in an allocation to renovate it into a concierge-cum-lounge”, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong.

The concierge-cum-lounge is in the planning stages at KLIA. Airports in Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching will have similar facilities once the facility at KLIA was completed.

The Minister also said that health travellers will be offered a Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) VIP card to ease the treatment process.

The article states that the medical tourism growth in Malaysia has increased 35% in two years. Since June 2012, the number of medical tourist coming into Malaysia increased by 17.96% from last year.

According to Datuk Liow, the increase in numbers is the result of Malaysia’s high quality healthcare and competitive prices. He said that most countries had a long waiting list and many choose to travel to Malaysia, especially for orthopaedic treatment.

About 60% of health travellers from 2011 came from Indonesia. The rest came from India, Japan, the United Kingdom, China, the United States, Australia, Iran, Libya and Nepal.
