Malaysia’s National Hero Dies

Bernama reported Sarawak’s most decorated soldier and double bravery medal winner, Datuk Kanang anak Langkau, has passed away at the age of 68.

Datuk Kanang was in the Royal Ranger Regiment (an infantry regiment of the Malaysian Army) and Regimental Sergeant Major (8th Rangers) of the Malaysian Army. He was the pride of Malaysia for his bravery in fighting communist terrorists in 1962 and 1963 while in the service of the Malaysian Armed Forces.

According to reports, the former Chief Warrant Officer of the famed Royal Rangers collapsed in his home after complaining of chest pains and breathing difficulty.

Datuk Kanang was awarded the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa and Panglima Gagah Berani gallantry medals during the emergency years (1963-1983). He was the last surviving recipient of the Sri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa award, which is the country’s highest award for bravery.
