Malaysian Hockey Player to Play for India

According to the New Straits Times, Malaysian goalkeeper, S.Kumar, will turn out for the Uttar Pradesh Wizards, in the Hockey India League starting 16 January. The Lucknow based team has one of the highest paid marquee players of the tournament, Teun de Nooijer from Netherlands.

The Wizards bid for Kumar was RM45,000 (US$15,000). The bid is a unique way used by Hockey India League, where teams have to bid during a player auction to rope in the best players.

S.Kumar will be creating history as he is the first goalkeeper from Malaysia to play in a foreign league. Kumar is the No.1 hockey goalkeeper in Malaysia and in Asia. He has a total of 203 caps.
