Police General Warns Potential Protesters in Malaysia

Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Malaysia’s outgoing Inspector General of Police, has strongly cautioned malcontents and non-governmental organizations not to incite public protests. Stirrings of unrest have been felt throughout the country after the ruling Barisan Nasional party won the majority of seats in the recent May elections, prompting those opposed to the BN to decry its victory as a subversion of democracy.

“If there are any parties unhappy with the results of the general election, there are legal alternatives which they can pursue instead of taking their grouses to the streets.” warned Omar “No individual or party can simply change the government through undemocratic means.

Police will not hesitate to take action against anyone who is found to be organizing street rallies for this purpose.”

Tan Sri Omar, who was given the honor of a farewell parade complete with military pomp, will be handing over the command of the police force to his deputy, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, tomorrow.
