New Sultan of Perak is Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah

The new Sultan of Perak is the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah. He will now be known as Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

The proclamation of the new Sultan, following the death of Sultan Azlan Shah, was made at the Balairong Seri (Throne Room) of the Istana Iskandariah at 3.15pm yesterday. The proclamation was read out by Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja Jen (rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin.

“Based on the Article 6 of the State Constitution Schedule 2, with the full consent and endorsement by the state Dewan Negara which convened on May 28, Raja Nazrin Shah has been appointed the new Sultan of Perak,” he said.

The 57 year-old Sultan is the eldest son of the late Sultan Azlan Shah, and is the 35th Perak Ruler.
“He is highly regarded as an intellectual and knowledgeable leader, and has a BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University; a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; and a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University,” wrote The Star.

“He was also conferred an honorary Master of Business Admi¬nistration by the Cranfield Institute of Technology, United Kingdom, in 1993; an honorary Doctor of Economics by Soka University, Japan, in 1999; and an honorary membership of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2005.”

“Sultan Nazrin is Universiti Malaya Pro-Chancellor; Perak Council on Islam and Malay Customs president; Malaysia Institute of Strategic and International Studies Eminent Fellow; Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security Royal Fellow; University of Oxford Chancellor’s Court of Benefactor member; and University of Oxford’s Worcester College Honorary Fellow.”

“He has been named University of Oxford’s Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies board of trustees member, Malay College Kuala Kangsar board of governors chairman, Kuala Lumpur Business Club Royal Patron and Merdeka Award board of trustees chairman.”

The new Sultan is also the financial ambassador for the Malaysian International Islamic Financial Centre and is Malaysia’s Special Envoy for Interfaith and Inter-Civilisational Dialogue.

Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is also an honorary officer of the Malaysian Armed Forces with the rank of Brigadier-General.
