Malaysia has plans to join the United States visa waiver programme in the next 18 months, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

According to Astro Awani’s report, with the visa waiver programme, Malaysians can enter and stay in the US for up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes, without having to apply for a visitation visa.

Countries such as Singapore, Brunei and 35 other (37 in total) have joined the visa waiver programme.
According to Zahid, Malaysia will work on tightening security by enforcing strict measures and imposing stricter border security checks.

The visa waiver programme is a good way to improve the flow of investors, tourist and students from Malaysia to US. Security screening could be conducted in Malaysia, before Malaysians enter the US. Zahid also said that Malaysia would change its entire border security checking system to enforce stringent checking. This includes detecting those on the suspects list.
