There’s a dangerous weed sprouting up in certain parts of Malaysia.

Parthenium hysterophorus was first detected in Ulu Yam, Selangor. But, according to The Star, the plant has now been spotted in Perak, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan.

The report on The Star also said that the weed destroys native flora and crops and can cause rashes that can leave humans permanently scarred. The weed also has asthma and eczema-causing properties. Also, it will damage the intestines of animals that eat it.

Initial attempts to control the plant with weed killers have failed. Areas in Sungai Petani were sprayed with herbicide, but fresh plants soon started springing up in just a few days. These weeds are also known to grow on roadsides making it easier to come into contact with people.

If you come into contact with this weed, you might start to feel itchy or short of breath. According to Malaysian Medical Association president Dr. H. Krishnakumar, you should automatically take an antihistamine should this happen. Also, be sure to wash your hands and relevant body parts which have had contact with the plant. If you start to experience severe allergic reactions like low blood pressure and your throat starts to swell, go to the nearest hospital immediately.

The spread of this weed is believed to be due to the import of animals from affected countries.
