Ever since its accidental birth in the mid- 90s, the Zumba Fitness programme has rapidly evolved into a global phenomenon with over 12 million people across 125 countries taking part in weekly Zumba classes. For those of you who are still not familiar with the term, “Zumba” is actually a dance-fitness programme. It incorporates aerobics and a variety of dance elements in a single fitness routine. By taking part in a typical Zumba workout, you will find yourself moving to the rhythm of fast, electrifying music. You will also be working some serious samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, and belly dance moves. Some hip hop, Bollywood dance moves and martial arts are also included in most routines. 1. Fitness First

Fairly renowned in Malaysia and the world, Fitness First has 13 outlets around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Fitness First outlets in Kuala Lumpur are located at Mont’ Kiara, Avenue K and Cheras Leisure Mall. Outlets at Petaling Jaya can be found at Menara Axis and The Curve shopping mall. Patronized by over 1 million members worldwide, this gym assures quality equipment at affordable prices.

Zumba classes at Fitness First are conducted several times a week at all Fitness First clubs. You may choose how frequent you wish to attend the classes in a week. The standard Zumba session typically lasts one hour. The studios here are very spacious so there is a lot of space to move around during the dance routine. At the 1 Mont’ Kiara outlet (Fitness First Platinum outlet), the studios used for Zumba classes are equipped with two stages since there are two instructors per class. There is no limit to the number of participants per class but it usually ranges from 15 to 20 participants, so it is guaranteed that the classes won’t get too congested.

Fees:
At Fitness First, there is no separate fee for Zumba classes. If you wish to participate in a Zumba session on a particular day, you need to pay a RM 68 gym entry fee. This payment entitles you to use the gym equipment for the entire day and participate in all group sessions conducted during that particular day.

A cheaper alternative would be to sign up for membership at any of the outlets which includes payment of a monthly membership fee. Membership fees vary according to the type of membership. By registering as a member, you can visit the gym as frequently as you want and join any of the classes being conducted in the studios whether it is a yoga session or a Zumba session. 2. DancePot

Dance Pot is an established dance school located in Setapak. The school takes pride in being able to provide a conducive environment for conducting dance lesson. Its studios are well-equipped with professional dance sprung floors that facilitate optimum shock absorption and cushioning, especially during high-impact fitness activities like Zumba.

The school offers a wide range of dance classes. Zumba is categorized under the range of fitness dance classes it offers.

The Zumba sessions here are held four times a week as follows:
-Wednesday (8pm)

-Saturday (10am)
-Sunday (9am)

You may choose to come for classes either once or twice a week. The number of participants per class is limited from 18 to 20 individuals so that there is sufficient space to move around during the workout. Although there is an instructor in front to lead the dance routine, participants are strongly encouraged to just let loose and dance spontaneously to the rhythm of the upbeat Latin music that is played during the dance routine.

3. Celebrity Fitness Malaysia

Celebrity Fitness is another fitness outlet that has made its name in Malaysia. It has many outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor and they are mostly located in shopping malls. There is an outlet at Bangsar Village 2, Mid Valley, Lot 10, Sunway Pyramid and even The Mines. The Mid Valley Celebrity Fitness outlet is the first chain outlet in the whole of Asia to launch the Aqua Zumba programme, a variation of the standard Zumba programme which combines water fitness disciplines with the Zumba dance.

Not all Celebrity Fitness outlets offer Zumba classes. For instance, the outlet at Bangsar Village 2 does not offer Zumba sessions. However, outlets at 1 Utama, Mid Valley, Lot 10, Sunway Pyramid and The Mines have Zumba classes. Usually classes are conducted several times a week but at The Mines, Zumba classes are only conducted once a week so it is best to check the group classes timetable at the Celebrity Fitness homepage. There are usually 15 to 20 participants per class.

Fees:
There is no separate package for Zumba sessions here. If you wish to participate in the Zumba classes at Celebrity Fitness clubs, you need to pay a standard membership fee of RM179 per month. This fee grants you access to all Celebrity Fitness clubs in Malaysia and you will be able use all gym equipment and participate in group sessions held anytime throughout the month.

4. Sole to Soul Dance Studio

Located in the suburbs of Petaling Jaya, the Sole to Soul Dance Studio offers professional training in dance and the performing arts. It welcomes students from all age groups and with varying experience levels.

Zumba is categorized under the range of fitness classes offered at the school. Apart from the standard Zumba Fitness programme, the school also offers variations of the standard programme such as Zumba Toning and Zumba Sentao. The Zumba classes here are held as frequently as 11 times a week. Currently, the standard Zumba classes are held on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while Zumba Toning is only conducted once a week on Tuesdays. However, there are many more upcoming intakes so it is best to visit the studio’s official webpage to check the new intakes that you can sign up for.

The Zumba classes here are conducted by four accredited Zumba instructors who are members of the Zumba Instructors Network (ZIN). The average number of participants to a class ranges from 10 to 15 people.

Fees:
If you wish to attend the standard Zumba classes once a week, the fee is RM 90 per month whereas the fees for Zumba Sentao and Zumba Toning are RM110 per month for four sessions. However, if you choose to attend Zumba classes more than once a week, just pay an overall fee of RM 220 per month and you can attend the Zumba classes as many times as you want during the month (from twice a week up to three times a week). 5. Dance Spirit Company KL

Dance Spirit Company KL is a dance and fitness studio located in Faber Plaza, Taman Desa, near the Faber Tower. Founded by the first Malaysian salsa instructor, it specializes in salsa but also teaches other dances such as Merengue, Cumbia, Bachata, Argentinian Tango, Lambada, Street Cha Cha and Zumba.

Zumba lessons here are conducted once a week by an accredited Zumba instructor. The minimum number of students per class is 5 students while the maximum is 20 students. Like the Sole to Soul Dance Studio, this studio also offers Zumba Sentao and Zumba Toning apart from the standard Zumba Fitness programme.

Fees:
The fees for Zumba lessons here are not on a monthly basis. Instead, payment is either made for five classes (RM 120) or ten classes (RM 200). No registration fee or deposit is required.

6. Fitology

Fitology is a fitness centre in Bangsar which mainly focuses on personal training to reap the maximum benefits of a workout. It is well-known for its comprehensive personal training package which interestingly includes a glass of natural smoothie after a 30 minute trainer-led workout and a soothing massage therapy at the end. Besides personal training, Fitology also conducts a few group sessions.
The Zumba Fitness programme was included in the group sessions only recently in the past three months. Probably due to the centre’s emphasis on personal training, a Zumba session is limited to a small group of 6 individuals so it easier for participants to follow the instructor as he demonstrates the dance routine.

7. Lara’s Place

Lara’s Place is a family-oriented centre in Petaling Jaya which organizes various recreational and learning activities for both adults and children. The Zumba Fitness programme, Tai Chi, belly dancing and yoga make up the array of fitness and wellness activities organized by the club.

Zumba classes here are held thrice a week as follows:
-Tuesday, 6.15pm-7.15pm
-Wednesday, 9.30am -10.30am
-Saturday, 12pm-1pm

The classes specifically target adults and teenagers with a range of 5 to 10 participants per class. It is very easy to follow the dance routine as the instructor is positioned in between the participants.

Fees:
If you wish to attend Zumba classes once a week, the fee is RM 90 per month. However, for those of you who wish to sweat it out more than once a week, a comprehensive package of RM188 per month is offered where you are granted unlimited access to four different types of exercise classes throughout the month. They include zumba fitness, yoga, belly dancing and wing chun(type of martial art). A registration fee of RM 35 is prompted upon signing up for a package or a particular class.

8. Living Dance Academy (Bukit Jalil)

Living Dance Academy offers private and group dance training at Bukit Jalil. Zumba sessions here are conducted in small groups of 3 to 5 participants.

Classes are conducted twice a week as follows:
-Wednesday, 7-8pm
-Friday, 7.30-8.30pm.

Fees:
You can choose to attend the sessions either once or twice a week. If you attend classes once a week, the fee is RM 90 per month and for twice a week, the fee is RM 165.

9. Jatomi Fitness

Jatomi Fitnesshttp://jatomifitness.com.my/en chains are mostly based in Eastern Europe but they also have fitness clubs in Malaysia and Indonesia. In Malaysia, Jatomi Fitness clubs can be found in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru. The club in Kuala Lumpur is located in The Weld Shopping Mall, Jalan Raja Chulan.

The Zumba classes here are conducted four times a week as follows:

Each Zumba session is not too packed as studios are large. Thus, you are guaranteed of having ample space to move around during the dance routine.

10. CHI

CHI fitness clubs are where art meets fitness. A visit to these gyms is especially worth it if you have the appreciation for art and beautiful designs. The fitness chain occupies two locations in KL and one in PJ. The clubs in KL are situated in the Bangsar Shopping Centre and The Scott Garden, Old Klang Road while the outlet in PJ is nestled within the PJ Trade Centre.

Zumba classes here are only held on Tuesdays at 9am and 8pm. Morning classes usually consists of a group of 10 to 15 participants while the evening classes are patronized by a smaller group of less than ten participants. The studios here are very spacious so you need not worry of the possibility of bumping into other participants as you are dancing. The studios are also well-equipped with mirrors so it is easy to follow the moves of the instructor even if you are standing right at the back of the studio.

Fees:
To enroll for Zumba classes here, you may either sign-up for a day pass or register for membership with the club. The day pass is RM 50. It grants you access to all gym equipment and group classes held on the day you sign up for the pass.

To register for membership with the gym, customers are given two options. You may either choose to pay a monthly fee of RM 250 or a yearly fee of RM 2376 (equivalent to RM198 per month).
