The Bakery Ukay Heights sits in repose in a quaint corner shop lot. Many have simply followed the smell trail to discover this gem of a bakery. Wafts of freshly baking bread and cakes envelope this charming residential enclave, inspiring hunger pangs and nostalgic memories of home and childhood. The Bakery is almost two years old and is a well-kept secret enjoyed by the Ampang folk and the lucky others who have come to know about it. The good news is that another branch, The Bakery Sri Hartamas is newly opened for us on the other side of KL.

Lisa, the engaging English lady who runs this establishment with her French husband Thomas Pagnoux, have been here in Malaysia for the last eight years. She speaks enthusiastically about how the business was inspired, struggling and learning through the start-up and finally a sense of satisfaction to see it take off. Today, every item in the shop is baked on the premises, with Chef Chiew, taking charge of the kitchen. They have also diversified to include cakes, pastries, and cookies, with a service counter for sandwiches and hot meals. Here in Ukay Heights, it is not a restaurant but a Boulangerie type of outlet. Business is brisk as people walk in and out with loafs and teatime snacks. Others stop for a quick meal and a strong cup of coffee.

Tables are set up al fresco, flanking one side of the shop; the ambience is casual, friendly, and unpretentious. At the far end is a lovely landscaped plot, which Lisa says was lovingly put together by regulars (friends) of The Bakery. Here, you can expect to get a substantial, healthy sandwich, with fillings and breads of your choice. Costing between RM8-12, this is value for money. The varieties of bread available are heartwarming; 9-grain and Dark Rye are very popular, baguettes and croissants are excellent, Parisian, Farmhouse, Brioche… and whatever inspires chef for the day. There isn’t a full menu, but hot meals at lunchtime include items like Vegetable Lasagna, Salmon in Filo Pastry and Chicken Cordon Bleu.

Perhaps The Bakery is best loved for its daily breakfast menu, available from 8am-1pm. The Big Breakfast at RM20 comprises 2 chicken sausages, sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes, 2 eggs, baguette toast, coffee/tea, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Scrambled eggs, Toast and croissant sets come cheaper and are excellent for those who want to start the day lighter.
