Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Name: Kara & Steve Burger
Home Country: Canada
Job/Industry: Oil & Gas

What brought you to Malaysia?
Steve got a job here so we have been in KL for four months now, and will be staying for a minimum of two years.

What do you like or dislike about the country?
Like most expats, we love the warm weather and the amazing food. And like everyone here, we dislike the traffic!

Name three typical weekend activities you enjoy most.
We love travelling around the region and exploring the different cultures. We also love hanging out with our friends and wakeboarding. We love trying out new things!

What is your favourite holiday destination here? Why?
Langkawi has been our favourite so far, but seeing as we’ve only just moved here really, we have many more places to explore. Penang is the next place on our list – we have heard amazing things about the place!

Describe a memorable eating experience you have had here.
We really enjoyed eating at the Thai fish farm restaurant near Lookout Point. The setting is beautiful and we had amazing seafood – there was even a saxophone player who gave us a mini concert while we were eating!

What do you miss most about your home country?
We do miss our family and friends very much. We also miss winter activities like snowboarding and sledding.

Is Malaysia a good place to work and do business in? Why?
We would say that Malaysia is a good place to do business, but it does help to have local colleagues.

What advice would you give to a newly arrived expat?
We would advise them to get involved in expat groups and try to meet as many people as possible. We would also recommend exploring the local areas and getting to know more about the culture here. It also helps to speak the local language so taking a Beginner’s course in Bahasa Malaysia helps (the YMCA offers this).
