Name: Kasandra Byberg
Home Country: Norway
Other countries you have lived in:
What brought you to Malaysia and how long have you been here?
I have always been interested in and fascinated by Asia. How better to experience and obtain a real feeling for a country than to actually live and work there? So when the opportunity arrived, I couldn’t refuse the offer. I’ve been in Malaysia for six months already.
What do you like and dislike about living here?
I like the friendly people, the food, the climate (although it can be too warm sometimes). I dislike that I have to be careful not to walk alone, and that I shouldn’t take a taxi alone at night-time – it makes it hard to be spontaneous!
Name three typical weekend activities that you enjoy.
That would be sightseeing, visiting skybars, and eating out at restaurants. The food and drinks are so much cheaper than home. And shopping of course, which is also much cheaper than in my home country.
What is your favourite holiday destination in Malaysia or the region?
I have only been in KL and around that area, but I’ve been planning a trip to Putrajaya and to Melaka. Hopefully I will be able to go very soon.
What do you miss about your home country?
I miss the freedom of being able to walk alone in the evening and early night without being careful and cautious.
What advice would you give to a new expat?
Be careful and play by the rules and advice that is given to you – but enjoy the culture and the friendly people and make the most of it.
Is Malaysia a good place to work or do business in?
Yes absolutely, I’ve had a great time thus far and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
