Sunway City Berhad (SunCity) is a property conglomerate within the Sunway Group which is led by founder Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Jeffrey Cheah. Cheah formed the group in 1986 to develop the Bandar Sunway township in Petaling Jaya; an area of 800-acres of wasteland which has been transformed and now features a shopping mall, resort, theme park, hospital and university.
Following the success of this first project, the group diversified and SunCity is the property conglomerate, consisting of both Property Development and Property Investment divisions. As a result, this has enabled the Group to enjoy the “best of both worlds” – a high-growth Property Development division and a stable base of income from high-yielding investment properties.
SunCity are a well-established successful brand, and to date they have delivered over 17,000 properties with a gross development value of RM9 billion and have many more properties under development. While most of their properties are within the Klang Valley, they also have projects in Penang and Ipoh and some upcoming developments overseas in Hyderabad and Maheswaram.
Each development is different and their various properties include both high-rise condominiums and houses, with a range of prices depending on area and development. One of the upcoming projects – LaCosta – features a ‘beach’ while the V Residence hits the high-end market with 18-storeys of service apartments close to Kuala Lumpur centre.
Most of the properties are situated in Bandar Sunway, which offers a convenient location for access to the shopping mall Sunway Pyramid as well as a highly-praised hospital and University, all owned by the Sunway Group.
Following on from their success with Bandar Sunway, the group are developing two more townships; one in Ipoh and one very close to the existing Bandar Sunway called Sunway South Quay, the latter of which boasts a lake. On top of their residential output, the group also develop retail outlets and business centres within the Klang Valley as well as in Penang and Ipoh.
The Sunway Group is well-established and has won various accolades; for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009, Sunway won the Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brand Award by Interbrand and the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) and the Brand Laureate Conglomerate Award by Asia Pacific Brands Foundation. SunCity has garnered awards as a property developer and has been awarded The Edge’s Top Property Developers Award for eight consecutive years.
