Over 70 people attended the Expat Penang/IWA mingle on 3 April at Four Points by Sheraton in Tanjong Bunga. Formerly the Tanjong Bunga Beach Hotel, it went through an extensive refurbishment a couple of years back and is now set to be one of the best beach hotels on the island. The rooms are comfortable and affordably priced so staying at the hotel has always been popular. But the food and beverage side of the hotel, under the guidance of the new GM, Adrian Stoppe, and the new chef, Chef Ismail, has taken off more recently. The Eatery produces a generous Brunch on Sunday as well as delicious beachside Barbecues on weekend evenings.

It has a magical setting – a small, sandy cove with the open sea beyond and a wide-open air lobby with a gorgeous sun deck, a bar (the Best Brewery), and a café (the Eatery). The Beach is particularly lovely and Chef Ismail told me that sometimes fishermen land their catches there directly so that fresh fish can be on the table within a matter of hours. There is a car park but if this is full, do not be deterred, as the hotel also offers free valet parking.
Minglers were treated to Roast Lamb (there was a vegetarian option as well) and roast potatoes with mint sauce. It was heavenly, and was preceded by some lovely hot and cold finger food. There were also little desserts to round the occasion off. Comments included “the best food ever”, “I had a really good evening”, and “Great people in a great setting.” The Penang Mingle bar just gets higher and higher.

There was a slight hiccup with the red wine – sorry about that — but I think the issue was resolved. However if anyone feels that they didn’t quite get their full third glass of wine, please come and talk to me at the next mingle, which will be at Penang’s oldest restaurant, Lok Thye Kee, 2 Burmah Road, on 5 May.

We would like to thank Danielle Maggio who took the pictures of our mingle and Marlene Fox and Kathy Roper who volunteered for the Welcome Desk.
