This post is brought to you in part by Straits International School.

Straits International School has made two significant achievements recently: first, it has become a member of the Round Square group of schools, becoming only the second school in Malaysia to have this honour.

Second, the school has started fully operating out of its new permanent campus in Bayan Lepas, spanning 90,000 square feet. The educational facilities include science laboratories, a spacious library,  and two 24-computer ICT suites, while the extra-curricular offerings include a large music room, instrumental practice rooms, a 6,100 square feet indoor multi-purpose hall, a drama room and and a large cafeteria.

The sports facilities include a futsal court, swimming pool and an Early Years play area, all strategically located opposite Penang International Airport and minutes away from the Second Penang bridge and the Free Industrial Area.

In just four years, Straits International School has grown from 17 students on the first day to an institution of almost 350 students today. It endeavours to foster the Round Square IDEALS, which are International-mindedness, Democracy, Environmental awareness, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

The curriculum and approach

Straits International School offers a British curriculum by Cambridge UK. The enthusiastic and highly trained teachers use the Project Based Learning teaching method for its flexibility to reach all ability levels. They offer classes for students aged 3 to 16, with a curriculum focused on preparation for the Primary and Secondary Cambridge Checkpoint test, supplemented by the National Curriculum of England and Wales, leading on to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

The school also teaches Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE), Information & Communications Technology (ICT), Malaysian Studies, Art, Music, Physical Education (PE), Drama, History, and Geography. Business Studies is taught at the Secondary school level.

There’s a 50:50 ratio of international to local teaching staff, which nicely reflects the school motto:

“Non Mihi, Non Tibi, Sed Nobis”

which means “Not for me, Not for you, But for us”. This aims to encompass the school’s goal to bind everyone together as one community.

The results

The school’s students achieved ‘Excellent’ results in their recent Cambridge checkpoint exams, and the best performing checkpoint students were offered scholarships. In 2015, SIS produced the highest individual IGCSE score in Malaysia for Global Perspectives with the same student achieving 9 A* and 1 A grade in total.

In 2016, 100% of the IGCSE students achieved A*-C grades in Additional Maths, Bahasa Malaysia, Global Perspectives, History, and Music. Recently, the Ministry of Education awarded Straits with a 5* Pemeriksaan Standard Kualiti Institusi Pendidikan Swasta (SKIPS) rating.
