As we March into the year (get it?), may our resolutions remain steady and our hearts light from the recent festivities. While the current weather is very encouraging for outdoor activities, make sure to pencil in some free time to visit our art galleries here in KL, too. Here’s bringing you your monthly dose of art exhibitions in KL for March 2018.

Inspiration from Malaysian Tropical Plants by The Refinery Art Gallery

The Refinery Art Gallery proudly presents a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Sanae Yamada. Her fascination with Malaysian flora is the heart of her works this time around, presented in bright and vivid colours. She said, “Painting was only for myself before. Just recently, I hope my painting may inspire peaceful, warm, and happy feelings, and become a precious piece to someone else.” Even though she has lived in Malaysia for the past 15 years, the flora and fauna hasn’t ceased to amaze her, and she continues drawing inspiration from them.

Hours: 1 – 6pm daily
Address: The Refinery Art Gallery, No. 3A, Ground Floor D6, 801, Jalan Sentul, 51000 Kuala Lumpur

Our Art Projects presents a group exhibition featuring emerging local artists Ibnu Alfadli Othman, Jun Kit, and Mark Tan. Titled ‘Heartbreak Hotel,’ their artworks circle around themes like angst, confusion, longing, frustration, loss of privilege, self-reflection, and running away from painful memories. Each artist explores the many facets of heartbreak and the works created range from mixed media on found paper and fabric, to gestural brushstrokes in mark-making and silkscreen prints.

Hymen by Wei-Ling Gallery

Wei-Ling Gallery will be presenting a solo exhibition by artist Ivan Lam, entitled Hymen. As the name suggests, the theme is inspired by female blood; vaginal and uterine blood loss, to be precise. Traditionally as well as globally, blood in context of sexual reproduction such as menarche, menstruation, and bleeding after defloration, is viewed with a negative perception. Interestingly, the male artist takes up this complex theme and turns it into art.

Dates: 14 March – 29 April 2018
Hours: 11am – 7pm, Tuesdays to Sundays
Address: Wei-Ling Gallery, Lot No RT-1, 6th Floor The Gardens Mall, Lingkaran Syed Putra, 59200 Kuala Lumpur

Soul Killers Don’t Quit by Minut Init Art Social

Image credit: Minut Init Art Social

This dual exhibition features Belgian artist Andy Wauman and Malaysian-born James Ly. Borrowing heavily from languages that are extinct, indigenous practices, obscure spiritual totems, and rarefied religious symbols, the artists invite audiences to think about our relationship with the here, the now, and what will be. The artworks are magical, ancient, and primitive in nature, and aim to be starting points of discussion on issues related to evolution, civilisation, politics, economics, and spirituality.

Dates: 24 February – 24 March 2018
Hours: 3 – 10pm daily
Address: Minut Init Art Social,  29A & B, Jalan SS21/37, Uptown Damansara Utama, 47400 Petaling Jaya, Selangor
