Gardening Titbits: Nurseries in Klang Valley

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

With a tropical climate of just sun and rain, why shouldn’t we take some time to get some gardening done? There are lots of flowers and plants that you can start growing, even simple and hassle-free plants, but the question is, where to get them? While some malls like IKEA and Aeon do have a gardening section, it’s best to visit a nursery, which are abundant in Malaysia.

A popular destination is in Sungai Buloh, near and within the former leprosy settlement. A place that is rich in history, the lepers in Sungai Buloh were the ones who initially started planting flowers and selling them. While leprosy was curable in the 1950s, the stigma was still a large issue, thus making it difficult for ex-leprosy patients to assimilate back into society.

According to The Star Online, the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) employed some of the men from the settlement. On the flip side, those who didn’t get employed received encouragement from the Sungai Buloh Hospital to grow ornamental plants to be sold in front of their houses, which has grown to what it is today.

Located just off the highway heading towards Shah Alam and the Subang airport, the nurseries are not difficult to find. All you need to do is get onto the road towards Sungai Buloh Hospital, and the rows of shops are hard to miss along the road! If you miss the exit to Sungai Buloh along the highway, don’t worry about it. Further along the road to Subang airport, just at the Kota Damansara exit is another nursery, literally along the highway. For a list of nurseries along the highway, check out My Garden Directory.

Another popular and well-known destination is Cameron Highlands. Here, they offer a different variety of plants, particularly flowers. Known as one of the largest flower producers in Malaysia, here you can find all kinds of flowers from roses to chrysanthemums and carnations. It definitely is worth the trip up for a quick getaway and to smell a flower or two!

From garden gnomes to cacti and flowers, Home Retreat Garden Nursery is available in Old Klang Road. You can visit their Facebook page for more on what they sell, and they seem to have some pretty quirky additions for the garden. They also have their own blog where they feature some of the plants available, as well as giving tips and advice on the care of different plants.
