If you’ve been on social media lately, I’m sure you’ve realised a string of sale deals being offered by online shopping sites on November 11th (11.11). Realistically speaking, who would ever want to question the existence of a good discount, right? But there is a significance to the 11.11 that’s heavily being advertised: it’s Singles Day!
Origins of Singles Day
According to Telegraph, the date started off as as an “anti-valentine” day, commemorating single people in China in the 90s, specifically by students at Nanjing University. Celebrated on November 11th annually, the date is written as 11.11, causing the day to also be known as “bare sticks holiday” because of how it looks.
In 2009, when the concept of online shopping was being accepted, China’s Alibaba spotted a business opportunity and adopted this concept, turning it into a day for everyone to buy a gift for themselves, regardless of relationship status. Fast forward to today, the celebration has now evolved to becoming the world’s biggest online shopping day, surpassing Black Friday too!
According to Time, Singles Day is now the largest shopping holiday in the world.
