Local Children Chosen for Coveted Von Trapp Family Roles

Children aged 7 to 13 were selected from the rigorous audition process to perform in the upcoming Malaysia season this December.

Some of Malaysia’s most exceptional young actors and actresses have been from a pool of over 400 talented applicants for the coveted parts of the six children who are part of the Von Trapp family, in the forthcoming Broadway production of The Sound of Music at Istana Budaya from December 27, 2022.

Anthony C. Daniel, James Gray, and Nate Patten from the Broadway creative team travelled to Dominus Arts Venue at Wangsa Maju in Kuala Lumpur, on June 28 and 29, to guide the applicants through a series of acting, singing, and dancing auditions. Seventeen children aged 7 to 13 were selected from the rigorous audition process to perform in the upcoming Malaysia season this December.

The 17 selected performers (and their ages) are Kimaya Peiris (8), Olivia Yu Shuen Leong (9), Nur Lily Armani Binti Saiful Bahtiar (7), Allegra Ai Ping Hew (9), Wan Emma Rose Wan Mohd Fyzaal (9), Olivia Wood (9), Chloe Siaw (14), Doreen Yip Zhi Ying (11), Isabelle Ho (11), Sean Lee Hong Jun (12), Lafayette Victor (11), Norman Ong Wen Zhe (9), En Huang (10), Natasha Tan (13), Vern Faye Yeoh (9), Izz Quedy Akhirudin (13), Christian Duvan Garry Malo (12).

The Sound of Music tells the uplifting true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changes the lives of the widowed Captain Von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music, culminating in the family’s flight across the Austrian mountains as tensions rise prior to the outbreak of WWII.

With its unforgettable score, The Sound of Music touches hearts of all ages and contains some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical theatre stage including My Favourite Things, Do-Re-Mi, The Hills are Alive, Edelweiss, and Sixteen Going on Seventeen.

Arguably one of the world’s best-loved musicals, the original 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music won five Tony awards including Best Musical, and is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s biggest success. The 1965 movie starring Julie Andrews as Maria won five Oscars including Best Picture, and remains one of the most popular movies of all time.

This Broadway production of The Sound of Music is produced by Broadway International Group and presented in Malaysia by Base Entertainment Asia.

Season date: From December 27, 2022 to January 15, 2023
Show timings:
Tuesday – Friday: 8:30 pm
Saturday: 3 pm and 8:30 pm
Sunday: 1 pm and 5 pm
Duration: 155 minutes (with 20-minute intermission)
