Through the thick and thin, one thing has prevailed: art! You know things are looking up when going out doesn’t have to be so purposeful, and you can actually spend time around quiet contemplations and colourful creations. The local art community has been buzzing with new collections after that lengthy lockdown, so here’s a few exhibitions featuring what happened!

Celebrating its eighth anniversary in June 2022, the TitikMerah Collective by Adeputra Masri, Latif Maulan, and Ajim Juxta continues to support the local arts community and encourage emerging artists to explore ideas via proactive exhibitions.

The collective’s newest exhibition simulacrum derives from the meaning of ‘something that looks like or represents something else’. Co-founder Ajim Juxta notes that the theme was chosen to best present the different subject matters done by each of the 18 featured artists, all abstract, realism, or conceptual. The exhibition is compromised of paintings, sculptures, and digital works.

Love and Happiness by Wong Chee Meng | Image credit: Wei-Ling Gallery

In conjunction with its 20th anniversary, Wei-Ling Gallery curates a seminal exhibition featuring contemporary Malaysian artist, whose artistic practices and critical provocations have defined the Malaysian art scene for the past 20 years.

The country’s contemporary art scene has long aimed to express the country’s highlights and issues, and to inspire the critical evolution of its artists and their engaging in themes that continue to have a pressing relevance. What better way to witness this perseverance than through this display of collectiveness?
