Owner Yap Ming Yang hopes that his version of a pet-friendly café will invite people to form a new appreciation for reptiles.

Pet cafés have been massively popular in the last decade with several establishments around the country having either dogs or cats as part of the experience, and animal lovers can’t get enough!

Reptile lover Yap Ming Yang who owns quite a large menagerie of scaly friends, had an entrepreneurial epiphany and decided to include his own pets at Fangs by Dekõri — becoming KL’s first reptile cafe. He hopes that his version of a pet-friendly café will invite people to form a new appreciation for snakes, lizards, and frogs.

Yap’s pets include bearded dragons, leopard geckos, and corn snakes, each resting in their respective glass enclosures placed all around the café in Sunway. According to Yap, they’re all species of reptiles that are commonly bred in Malaysia.

“People only care about furry animals, cats, dogs, but people always leave out reptiles and snakes,” said Yap, who has a background in environmental science and is part of a community of Malaysians with an interest in herpetology — the study of reptiles.

“So I hope showing the public how interesting (they) are, we can cause them to have a better outlook on reptiles and less loved animals.”

Apart from a host of animals people can get to know, and handle with care (staff will assist customers with the handling of each pet), the café serves trendy desserts like kakigori, waffles, and assorted beverages. For more information, check out their Instagram @fangs.kl.
