From noon today, toll collection at three major highways in Kuala Lumpur and seven toll plazas around Malaysia will be cashless. This will hopefully ensure smoother traffic at toll plazas.

Motorist will have to use their Touch n’ Go or Smart Tag to pay for toll charges.

The first three major highways in KL to have a fully electronic toll collection system (ETC) are; the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh); the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART); and the Duta-Ulu Klang Expressway (DUKE).

The seven toll plazas involved in the new ETC system are; Jitra, Bukit Kayu Hitam and Lunas in kedah, Kubang Semang and Penang Bridge in Penang, and Gombak and Bentong at the KL-Karak highway.

Might even get worse because Malaysians always wait for last minute to adapt to new systems/regulations eg. pay summons or submit income tax forms on last day. They should gradually close a ‘tunai’ booth over a time period to get people to get a card out of frustration.

You can only wish, Peter. How many times have you seen vehicles reversing because something technically wrong at the ‘tag/scan’ point.
