With an inviting setting, attentive service, and impressively priced Cantonese dim sum, Long Feng at Dusit Princess Melaka offers a relaxed yet polished dining experience that delivers plenty of flavour without putting too much strain on the wallet.
Located on the first floor of the polished new Dusit Princess Melaka, Long Feng delivers a refined approach to Cantonese cuisine, with a few subtle nods to Szechuan flavours as well. The restaurant’s smart décor and warmly lit dining room lend it an inviting, upscale feel, while its popular weekend dim sum brunch has made it a go-to for both locals and hotel guests. Beautiful lanterns and direct lighting abound, complementing the well-spaced tables and relaxed ambiance. It’s the kind of place that strikes a balance between casual and elegant – ideal for anything from a family lunch to a low-key business meal. We were in Melaka recently and popped in for a breezy weekend dim sum lunch early one afternoon, having read some good reviews.
Though we would normally order from the comprehensive à la carte menu, this time we wanted to try Long Feng’s all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet option. Priced at RM98 nett for adults (children under 4 years old eat free), the buffet option is available on weekends (Saturdays & Sundays) and public holidays, and runs from 9:00am to 2:30pm. While a wide range of dim sum dishes are available on the buffet’s steam table, there are quite a number that don’t do well in this format, so the restaurant prepares those dishes specifically to order. We liked that!
We found that the service was well-paced and accommodating, with staff ready and willing to explain the menu and portion sizing for what was prepared to order. We stuck pretty much to dim sum, and the highlights from that menu included perfectly crisp deep-fried bean curd prawn dumplings (always a favourite), plump siu mai (chicken and prawn), and a wonderfully fresh har gow (crystal prawn dumplings). Some of these were offered on the buffet, while some – such as the har gow – were steamed fresh to order. Everything was remarkably good.
Like most diners whose reviews we checked, we agree that the overall experience – food, setting, and service – holds up well, making Long Feng a solid option for quality Chinese dining in central Melaka. The best part? The prices are fantastic given the cuisine and the elegant ambiance of the dining room. If you opt for the buffet, you’ll know your total price right from the start. If you choose the à la carte path, those prices are very good, too, with most dim sum selections at only RM13 nett each, an amazing price for these dishes in a proper setting like this. (The steamed BBQ pao selection was RM15 nett, but it included three buns, whereas we’re accustomed to getting only two at many dim sum places! Similarly, we had four siu mai dumplings rather than the more common three… excellent!) Moreover, the delicious pan-fried turnip cake was only RM9 nett. The fried rice, which is wok-fried Yang Zhou style, is a fine choice, and it’s available in two sizes, both quite generous (RM24/RM44 nett). A similar rice (or perhaps the very same?) is also on the buffet table for those choosing that option.
Aficionados of Chinese tea will be thrilled here, too, as there is an extensive Te Hang premium tea menu, with the numerous selections categorized into dark, oolong, green, and aromatic/flower tea sections. Prices for a sizeable pot of tea range from RM22 to RM34 nett, and helpful tasting notes are provided.
Desserts at Long Feng are also a treat, all priced at RM16 nett on the menu, while several options are offered on the buffet. The Double-Boiled Soft Pear with Dried Longan and Peach Jelly tempted us, as did the Chilled Pomelo and Sago in Mango Purée, this one served with ice cream. There are a half-dozen more options, too, most of them sounding very appealing, though some diners may be less enthused by the Crispy Fried Durian Pancake!
Private rooms are available, and Long Feng is open for lunch and dinner most days (see below). If you’re in Melaka and in search of a nice but unpretentious Chinese restaurant serving up lovely Cantonese fare, we feel Long Feng is a winning choice and find it easy to recommend. The highly favourable Google reviews are well-earned, and It’s landed on a few “best of Melaka” dining lists for a reason!
Long Feng is fully pork-free and operates with a Muslim-friendly, halal kitchen.
