So you’re moving to another country and setting up base there. No matter how temporary or otherwise, it’s important to be prepared in case of any emergencies. While that might include having emergency contacts notified and listed in your phone, another thing to think of is insurance – created for exactly that purpose. Whether it’s for ease of mind or to be prepared for pre-existing conditions, here’s five good reasons for expats to have international health insurance in Malaysia, or anywhere else for that matter.
1. Emergency assistance
Most, if not all, international health insurance providers offer a 24/7 serviced hotline where customers can get access to medical professionals. In the case of an emergency, the insurance also typically covers things like the ambulance fees and relocation to another hospital (in your home country perhaps), all the way to the medical treatment itself. Depending on your plan, if the patient needs to seek treatment in another country, the international health insurance may also cover the travel expenses of an accompanying family member.
2. Wherever you may go
International health insurance companies are large and partner with a wide range of reputable hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies. Take comfort in knowing that wherever you are, they’ve got your back. There are packages that can be tailored by region, if you know you’ll only be moving around within Europe, for instance. However, if you plan to go on vacation out of your current work-assigned country, it might be best to opt for global international health insurance. This is so you wouldn’t have to call up the insurance company and notify them every time you traveled out of your area of coverage.
3. Pre-existing conditions
There are a number of plans that offer a limited amount of coverage for pre-existing conditions. If you already know of a pre-existing condition you’ll be dealing with while abroad, make sure you’re prepared and covered by your international health insurance in advance.
4. Wait less
If you have ever had to wait in line at a public hospital, you’d remember the experience. When it comes to being so sick that you’re willing to go to a hospital, waiting for your turn can be unpleasant, or even lethal. Having an international health insurance will help you avoid all that. Instead, you could head to a private hospital or clinic to enjoy quicker response and consultation services. Just remember to bring along your health insurance card and keep the receipts to claim them later.
Depending on your needs, make sure you choose a health insurance that covers all bases. While working in a foreign country might make you eligible for their healthcare programme, double check to know what exactly that includes. Does it cover general check ups as well as emergency situations and maternity care? Signing up for international health insurance can give you more flexibility in terms of what you need and want to have covered. There are usually ‘core’ or basic packages that cover the general stuff, and which you can then add on optional benefits to.
