Sunway Medical Centre Damansara has officially launched after nearly two years of operations, with an expanding range of specialist services, advanced medical technology, and plans for further development aimed at serving patients across the Klang Valley and beyond.
Sunway Medical Centre Damansara (SMCD) has officially marked a new chapter in its development, celebrating its launch as the fourth tertiary hospital under Sunway Healthcare Group and strengthening its position as a specialist healthcare destination for patients in the Klang Valley, expatriates, and international health travellers.
Located in Kota Damansara, the hospital began operations in December 2024 and was established to bring comprehensive specialist healthcare closer to communities in the northern, northwestern, and western parts of the Klang Valley. Its official launch ceremony on October 1 was officiated by Selangor Chief Minister Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari.
With more than 370 beds, 60 specialist consultation suites, and eight operating theatres, SMCD provides a broad range of medical and surgical services. These include cardiology, neurosciences, gastroenterology and hepatology, orthopaedics and spine, oncology, ear, nose and throat, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, urology, and plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The hospital also incorporates advanced diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, including AI-enabled and robotic-assisted solutions, supporting precision, complex interventions, and multidisciplinary care.

LOOKING AHEAD
According to Sunway Healthcare Group President Dato’ Lau Beng Long, the hospital is already looking towards its next phase of development, with approximately four acres earmarked for future expansion.
Proposed plans include a standalone Sunway Sanctuary focused on senior living, as well as a dedicated Cancer and Nuclear Medicine Centre designed to expand access to advanced cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The proposed centre could include a cyclotron, PET-CT, linear accelerators, and a CT simulator, together with a Proton Beam Therapy Centre. If developed as proposed, the proton beam facility would be the first of its kind in Malaysia.
The plans underline Sunway’s ambition to develop SMCD into a more comprehensive healthcare destination, with a continuum of specialist services for both Malaysian and international patients.

The hospital has also been working to make access more convenient for the surrounding community. A new ramp connecting Persiaran Surian to Jalan PJU 5/1 provides more direct access to the hospital and Bandar Sunway Damansara, while a link bridge to Sunway Nexis connects patients and visitors with Surian MRT station, as well as nearby retail, dining, and lifestyle facilities.
That connectivity is particularly relevant to SMCD’s growing international healthcare ambitions. Subang Airport is nearby, while Kuala Lumpur International Airport can be reached via a direct drive along the North-South Expressway.
An International Patient Centre provides dedicated support for overseas patients, with nurses and translators assisting with specialist appointments, treatment co-ordination, admissions, and communication. The hospital also serves Malaysia’s expatriate community, offering specialist care, preventive healthcare, advanced surgery, rehabilitation, and multidisciplinary treatment.
Despite being relatively young, SMCD has already reported a strong operational performance. The hospital achieved its first EBITDA-positive month within nine months of commencing operations, significantly ahead of the typical three- to five-year ramp-up period for a new hospital.
Chief Executive Officer Jasmine Lau Mooi Hun said the hospital had grown substantially in a relatively short period, both in the breadth of services offered and in the confidence placed in it by patients, partners, and the wider community.

The next stage will extend beyond the main hospital itself. Ambulatory services at Sunway Specialist Centre Damansara, located across the road, will complement the hospital’s existing capabilities, while the Sunway Traditional Chinese Medicine Centre is planned to open in the first quarter of 2027.
Together, these developments are intended to create a more integrated healthcare ecosystem around Kota Damansara, bringing specialist treatment, outpatient services, rehabilitation, preventive care, and other healthcare options into a connected environment.
For a hospital that only began operating in late 2024, SMCD has therefore moved fairly quickly from opening its doors to establishing a sizeable specialist operation, building connections with the surrounding community, and planning what could become a considerably larger healthcare destination.
The challenge now is to continue that growth while maintaining the accessibility, co-ordination, and patient experience that the hospital says are central to its approach.
